Respect is earned, not worn. In 1967 I completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. I was 20 years old and equal parts full of myself and utterly terrified. The prospect of leading an infantry platoon in Vietnam loomed in the near future.
